COLFAX DESIGN WORKS | SDP_01

by Pascal Rohé

What is up in sunny California? How do those guys from Colfax Design Works keep bringing out such awesome pieces with each new release when they’re still so new to the business?

First the Recon Pack, which scored so well in our test a couple of months ago, and now the new SDP_01, a daypack that’s a cut above the rest.

As we’ve already thoroughly examined and tested the Recon, inside and out, we can use the experience as a good basis for taking a closer look at the SDP_01.

You could say the SDP is the answer to the demand for a smaller version of the Recon. Instead of 30L, the SDP has a volume of 21L. That may sound small, but CDW really knows how to optimize the use of the space. They’ve done away with the bottom shoe compartment, leaving one large roll-top compartment. At the back, they’ve kept the extra, padded compartment, large enough for a 15” laptop or for documents. Also, there is a small pocket at the top of the backpack. Sealed with a water-resistant YKK zipper, it’s ideal for all the things you need quick access to, like your wallet, mobile phone or keys. Inside this pocket is a further, smaller zippered pocket.

As the SDP_01 is also equipped with CDW’s Advanced Modular Cargo System (A.M.C.S.), you can also adapt the volume of the backpack as needed with CDW’s Dopp Kitts.

What makes the SDP an especially valuable member of the Outdoor family is the extra pocket in the backpack specifically designed to hold a hydration pack. There’s even an opening for the drinking tube which can then be fixed to the shoulder strap. If you’re travelling without a hydration system, you have yourself an additional inner pocket.

Just like the Recon, the SDP is 100% waterproof, thanks to its use of X51 1000d Cordura with tear-resistant X-ply layer. Not only does it give the SDP a cool tactical/military look, it’s already proved itself in the field with the Recon Pack. One thing you don’t have to worry about with the SDP is the weather. This daypack can handle anything. Together with the high quality of the workmanship, the SDP really sets the bar high. Everything is of the highest quality and flawlessly put together.
And the daypack doesn’t fall short in terms of comfort either. Usually, the backpacks that look good are also the uncomfortable ones. It’s all about the look and the design, and designers forget to invest in the shoulder straps and the back padding. The shoulder and back padding of the SDP_01 are not only very comfortable, they are also made from moisture-wicking air mesh and mill-spec webbing.

The sternum straps are removable and incorporate an anti-load quick release buckle. All straps and cords can be secured with plastic clips so nothing hangs or flaps about. Everything has its place without seeming overly regimented.

Conclusion:

The SDP_01 from Colfax Design Works is a work of perfection. Every little detail has been thought through, and all the materials used have been carefully selected, worked and put together. At Colfax, they don’t go for mediocre mass-produced goods, they value developing a product as long as they need to until everything is as good as it can be. And you can see that with the SDP_01. Welcome to the premier league.
