03 Jul The Anatis Jean from Finisterre

Looking back on the fashion of the past few decades, it’s immediately clear that no other piece of clothing has had the staying power of the humble jeans. To be sure, this fashion icon actually dates back to the 1870s where they were first envisioned as tough, durable workwear, made using robust denim and with pockets reinforced with rivets.
Fashion has changed in a many, many ways over the last 150 years but through it all jeans have managed to stay true to themselves and are sure to remain popular long into the future.

The Finisterre Anatis Jean

If you follow our blog, then you’re sure to be already familiar with Finisterre. This very likeable brand from England started out making innovative products for cold water surfers. Today, they offer a highly respectable collection that, though having not so much to do with cold water surfing, still boasts beautiful design and high functionality, making it perfect for the outdoor market.

One of my favourites of the current collection is the Anatis Jean. The first impression you get of the Anatis is of a pair of fashionable, slim-cut jeans. But what you don’t see are the special functional properties which become immediately noticeable in bad weather.

The Anatis is made from a mix of 94% cotton, 4% polyester and 2% elastane, making them very comfortable. The jeans are then treated with the water-repellent Schoeller ecorepel® finish, meaning water droplets simply rolls off the surface instead of soaking in. Mud too. And the fabric remains throughout breathable and soft.

I was able to test this out for myself on my trip through the Pacific Northwest. Unlike most people, I like to wear jeans when hiking. Because the material is so tough, unlike the thinner trousers made from synthetic materials, I don’t have to worry when sitting down on rocky surfaces or kneeling on the ground to get a campfire going.

I was able to wear the Anatis on my hikes just as comfortably as when I’m getting about the city in sneakers. That’s the best thing about jeans: their flexibility. They have a certain fashionable neutrality that goes with everything. And with the Anatis, it’s the perfect unity of nature and the city.

Unfortunately, jeans have fallen into some disrepute in recent times over how they are produced. Too companies still use environmentally-harmful chemicals in their production and dyeing of jeans. Not so the Anatis! Schoeller ecorepel® is fluorocarbon-free, biodegradable, passes Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 and is bluesign® certified. And the jeans are made in England.
